Recording your Mountain Expedition as a Keepsake
Before the invention of helmet cameras, mountain tours, sports, and expeditions were often difficult to record. Activities such as rock climbing, for instance, require you to have your hands free at all times, while many other mountain-based activities are also best managed safely with focused engagement on the task at hand. Distractions can often be dangerous and deadly, which has often prevented people from bringing along a camcorder to record the events as they’re happening. Whether you want to capture your first climb or just your most recent mountain adventure these days, you don’t have to worry about jostling around a handheld camera at the same time you’re engaging in your activity. Instead, you can rely on a helmet cam, which is a hands-free device that allows you to capture stable footage from a first person point of view.
There are some critical factors to keep in mind when using a helmet camera, and knowing these facets will allow you to adjust your approach to shooting video accordingly. Because you won’t be able to operate the camera effectively while it’s atop your head, you’re going to have to rely on some video editing software to make cuts in the footage you’re collecting. Some of it is bound to be bumpy and unusable, but even a basic editing program will suffice. Furthermore, it will be hard to capture yourself since the camera is on top of your head, though you’ll certainly get some shots of your hands and other extremities along the way. So if you planned on making yourself the star of the show, you’ll want someone traveling with you to don the cam instead.
Still, if what you’re really going for is a first person view of what you’ve accomplished on your trek or climb, using a helmet cam is one of the best ways to keep that memory intact. It’s like a recorded memory of your own, only if your eyes sat on top of your head instead of in your skull. So for a unique filming experience for whatever mountain expedition you decide to take, this is one advantageous alternative to filming by hand to consider. Just be sure that the helmet itself is secure and sturdy enough for whatever specific mountain activity you’ve planned, as you don’t want your video shooting equipment to interfere with your safety. So long as it passes that inspection, you should be good to go and record your experience.
